note: Mexico had never won a World Cup match against any of the seven countries that have won the competition (11 defeats and five draws).

1-0 With his back to goal, Hernández plays the ball back to Márquez on the halfway line, turns and sprints towards the France goal. Márquez dinks a beautifully weighted pass over the top for him to run on to. He's directly in line with the static defence when the ball is played: onside. His first touch is marvellous, bringing him clean through on goal with the ball at his feet. He takes it right and wide of Lloris, slots it into the empty net. His first WC goal and emulates his grandfather Tomás Balcázar González, who scored against France in 1954.

2-0 Blanco the substitute takes a massive run-up and blasts the ball low and to Lloris's right.

It emerged slowly after this match that Anelka finally snapped with his slightly mad manager Domenech after being told he was to be substituted at half-time. Anelka responded to criticism from the coach by angrily saying "go fuck yourself, dirty bastard" or words to that effect. Anelka later refused to apologise when asked to by French Football Federation president Jean-Pierre Escalettes. “Faced by the refusal of the player to publicly apologise, he (Escalettes) took the decision in total agreement with the coach and the official members of the delegation present to exclude Nicolas Anelka from the squad,” the FFF said in a statement. He was sent home and the team rebelled the next Sunday by refusing to train [Anelka was later given an 18 match ban by the FFA, but had retired from international football. 69 caps and 14 goals.]

Moments before a public training session was about to begin, Domenech had to separate captain Patrice Evra and fitness coach Robert Duverne. Duverne is understood to have stormed away from an argument with the Manchester United defender, throwing his accreditation badge to the ground. The players then left the pitch and walked to their bus where they had a meeting with Domenech behind closed doors.

The French Football Federation's managing director subsequently quit. Domenech chose Anelka to start France's first two games "I am disgusted, I am quitting my post," FFF managing director Jean-Louis Valentin said immediately after the incident between Evra and Duverne, before driving off in his car. "It's a scandal for the French, for the federation and the French team. "They don't want to train. It's unacceptable. As for me, it's over. I'm leaving the federation. I'm sickened and disgusted."

1-0 Beautiful left foot strike by Birsa 25yds out into the top right past a stranded Tim Howard.

2-0 Novakovič calmly played the ball to his left to Ljubijankič, who ran into the box and slotted it past the onrushing Howard.

2-1 Cesar slid for the through ball on the right missing a simple clearance, Donovan took full advantage, racing into the box and smashing the ball into the roof of the net from a tight angle while the goalkeeper hid and made a pathetic gesture of an attempted save.

2-2 Long diagonal ball into the box to Altidore, who outjumps his marker to nod an inviting ball to the onrushing Bradley who smashed it past Handanović. After 83' Donovan curled a freekick from the right into the packed box. Edu met it with a left footed volley and blasted in from close range. No goal given - still do not know why, probably pushing, but it looked like all the defenders were doing the shoving.

Booked: : Bassong 49', M'Bia 75'. / Sørensen 86', Kjaer 87' .

0-1 Eto'o. Just outside his area, Christian Poulsen plays a dreadful blind pass wide right. Webo picks it up and from the Cameroon left wing rolls the ball back into the centre for Eto'o, who wheechs the ball under the advancing Sørensen and into the net.

1-1 From a long raking diagonal Kjaer pass, the defender standing in the left-back position, Rommedahl tears down the right past Assou-Ekotto, and squares the ball low for Bendtner, who slides in eight yards out and pokes home.

2-1 From the centre circle, Bendtner sends a pass down the right to Rommedahl, who cuts inside and unleashes a beautiful curler into the bottom-left corner. Cameroon are to first team to go out of the tournament.

Booked: Kroldrup 29' pulled back Endo for free kick, Poulsen 48' arm into the face of Honda, Bendtner 66' dissent for being crap / Endo 12' time wasting taking a free-kick, Nagatomo 26' time wasting on throw in?

1-0 free-kick, Keisuke Honda, 30 yards out, sends a left-foot shot arcing into the far corner. Sørensen took a decisive half-step to his left before flinging himself, in vain, to his right.

2-0 Everyone assumes Honda's going to have another pop, but instead Endo steps up and curls it beautifully over the wall and into the far corner with his right foot.

2-1 80 min: Penalty to Denmark! Agger goes down in the box under Makoto Hasebe's challenge. A slight push, made a meal of it. Tomasson misses the penalty, but collects the rebound and puts it into the corner.

3-1 Really good build-up, the pass to Honda, his clever does Rommedahl and the square pass to let Okazaki tap into an empty net

Booked: N'Koulou 25', M'Bia 81'. / Kuyt 17', van der Vaart 64' van Bronckhorst 70' .

1-0 Van Persie gallops down the right flank, plays a lovely one-two with Van Der Vaart ... and then shoots low and diagonally through Souleymanou, who was unable to adjust his feet in time to block the shot and gets nutmegged.

1-1 Eto'o takes the spot-kick, blasting it chest-high to the goalkeeper's right. Stekelenburg went the right way, but the ball fizzed between his outstretched hand and the upright.

2-1 from the outside of Sneijder's boot, the ball's played over the top for Robben to chase and he leaves Song, in his dust. His first touch is poor and causes him to take the ball wide, but keeping his head, he cuts inside, takes the ball around Song and unleashes a curling shot that beats Souleymanou and smacks off the upright. The ball bounces back into play and Huntelaar has the relatively easy task of pinging it into the empty net from 12 yards.

Booked: Ramires 88' late on the tackle.

1-0 Elano releases Maicon on the overlap inside the area - it looks like he will pull the ball back from near the by-line but his attempted cross goes straight in at the near post of the toe of his right boot - he will no doubt say later that he meant it, but he was looking into the box to cross when he hit it.

2-0 Robinho's slide-rule pass finds Elano running into the area, and he sidefoots it iside the far post for a cool first-time finish.

2-1 A clever long ball is headed by Hong Jong-Jo into the onrushing Ji Yun-nam, and he steadies himself before firing across the diving Júlio César.

Red Card: Kaká 88' the replay clearly shows Keita running in to a tranquil Kaká who lifts his arm to block Keita banging into him. Keita bounces off and writhes around. As the ref didn't see it the decision must have come via his earpiece from the Fourth official. A really unfair dismissal.

Booked: Kaká 85' pushing and shoving with Y Touré, / Tiéné 31' turned by Elano, Keita 75' studs up on Felipe Melo, Tioté 86' foul on Fabiano.

1-0 Kaká slips in Luís Fabiano inside the box for the frontman to smash into the roof of the net from eight yards.

2-0 Definately handled the ball - probably twice but Luís Fabiano gets his second by flicking the ball over one defender's challenge, clipping over another and then slamming home left-footed into the corner.

3-0 Kaká beats derfenders on the left and lays it back for Elano to tap in.

Prize money

The total prize money on offer for the tournament was confirmed by FIFA as £279,720,000 (US$420 calculated
at the exchange rate used at the time of the WC was £1 to US$1.12 or US$1 to £0.67p)) million (including payments
of US$40 million to domestic clubs), a 60% increase on the 2006 tournament. Before the tournament, each of the 32
entrants received £660,000 (US$1 million) for preparation costs. Once at the tournament, the prize money was
distributed as follows:

  • £5,328,000 million (US$8m) – To each team eliminated at the group stage (16 teams).
  • £5,994,000 million (US$9m) – To each team eliminated in the Second Round (8 teams).
  • £9,324,000 million (US$14) – To each team eliminated in the quarter-finals (4 teams).
  • £11.988 million (US$18) – Fourth placed team.
  • £13.320 million (US$20) – Third placed team.
  • £15,984,000 million (US$24) – Runner up.
  • £19,980,000 million (US$30) – to the Winning team, Spain.

FIFA research, which took a year to produce after the 2010 World Cup in South Africa, said 909 million
television viewers tuned in to at least one minute of the 2010 final at home. Some 619.7 million people also
watched at least 20 consecutive minutes of Spain’s 1-0 extra-time win over the Netherlands in Johannesburg. More
than 3.2 billion people watched live coverage of the 2010 tournament for a minimum of one minute. The average
official rating was 188.4 million for each match.

The growth in the business of the World Cup has been robust since the late 1990s due to the big jump in
broadcasting rights. Television rights outside of the U.S. for the 2002 and 2006 World Cup were sold for $2
billion, a six-fold increase versus the $310 million paid by the European Broadcasting Union, a consortium
representing the interests and financial power of Europe’s public broadcasters, for the three tournaments held in
the 1990s. Since 1998 overall World Cup revenue for FIFA has increased 11-fold.

In a first for the World Cup, FIFA made payments to the domestic clubs of the players representing
their national teams at the tournament. This saw a total of £26,640,000 (US$40) million paid to domestic clubs.
This was the result of an agreement reached in 2008 between FIFA and European clubs to disband the G-14 group and
drop their claims for compensation dating back to 2005 over the financial cost of injuries sustained to their
players while on international duty, such as that from Belgian club Charleroi S.C. for injury to Morocco's
Abdelmajid Oulmers in a friendly game in 2004, and from Newcastle United for an injury to England's Michael Owen in
the 2006 World Cup.
