The sorry end for the greatest ever Danish players to represent their country. Although they lost a few players berfore the kick-off - Sivebæk, to a very bad stomach bug, Qvist had an ear infection that made him dizzy on the bench, Elkjær and Bertelsen played though not 100% and crucially Frank Arnesen RM was suspended after a moment of madness at the end of the GER group match. Henrik Anderson was chosen at left back and Jesper Olsen had to switch to the right of midfield from his more favoured left. They met a clinical Spanish team.
Denmark took the lead when Gallego flattened Elkjær in the box. Olsen coolly put it the opposite side to Zubizarretas' dive. Then disaster just before half time. Høgh rolled it to Jesper Olsen who was pressured by Salinas, Jesper sidestepped the Spaniard and instead of playing it up the wing inexplicably passed it back to the centre of the penalty area where he imagined his goalie to be. Only to see Butragueño swoop on it before the stranded Høgh could get there. In Denmark this incident is known cruelly as a rigtig Jesper Olsen - a real Jesper Olsen to describe a mistake. They went on to lose 1-5, with El Buitre netting four (the first time this has happened to a team since Eusébio single handedly beat North Korea in 1966. 'It annoys me tremendously still today, because it's ridiculous. We were the better team, but we lost our heads and that's crazy.' Preben Elkjaer

It has been said that Maradona won the 1986 World Cup for Argentina single-handedly; well he did it against England in this game and scored a brilliant solo goal - the best goal of this, or arguably, any WC.
