1974 Poster

General Points

  • Location and Dates: West Germany, 13th June to 7th July 1974 - West Berlin (Olympiastadion 85,000 capacity), Dortmund (Westfalenstadion 53,600), Düsseldorf (Rheinstadion 69,900), Frankfurt am Main (Waldstadion 62,200), Gelsenkirchen (Parkstadion 53,600), Hamburg (Volkparkstadion 60,600), Hannover (Niedersachsenstadion 58,700), München (Olympiastadion 74,500, of which 44,200 seated. cost DM85 million), Stuttgart (Neckearstadion 72,200).
  • Decided at FIFA Congress in London, 6th July 1966. Unopposed.
  • Entries deadline 30th June 1971. 99 teams entered, 90 actually played (23 for the first time in the preliminaries). Venezuela, Jamaica, Ceylon, India, Philippines, Gabon & Madagascar withdrew. North Korea replaced India in March 1973, almost two years after the closing deadline. The Soviet Union was disqualified for refusing to play Chile in a play-off after the fascist coup d'état in that country. Nigeria were disqualified out of the competition after a match at home to Ghane was abondonded at 85' due to rioting over the 2-3 scoreline. Their Association was dissolved by the president of Nigeria
  • Qualifications drawn 17th July 1971 in Düsseldorf.
  • Finals drawn 5th January 1974, Radio Hessen main studio in Frankfurt am Main.
  • Participating teams: Argentina, Australia, Brazil [4], Bulgaria, Chile,
East Germany, Haiti, Italy [10], Netherlands, Poland, Scotland, Sweden,
Uruguay [13], West Germany [1], Yugoslavia, Zaire. The seeding was agreed by a vote of the FIFA OC.
  • Format changed to four groups of four teams with the first two teams progressing to 2 quarter-final groups (seperated by goal difference - the first time it had been used in a WCF tournament). The winners of the second round groups becoming the finalists and the runners up the third place play-off.
  • Substitutes; as 1970 two to be used from five nominated.
  • The teams competed for a new trophy: the FIFA World Cup.
  • In a futile effort to boost his country's performance, Zaire's
President Motubo had awarded each of his players a car, a trip for two
to anywhere in the world, and a house - just for qualifying (he never honoured his word).

Simon Barnes (The Times) later said this was his favourite WC match. Arie Haan recalls another side to the great 'Total football' of Holland: 'Before the game we drew up a list of our players who would hit him (Bulgarian playmaker Hristo Bonev) with hard tackles early on. Neeskens first, van Hanegem second then Suurbier, I think, Wim Jansen, maybe....I forget the order and exactly who it was. I think I was number five. But he never needed number five. After four tackles, Bonev didn't want the ball anymore. He didn't give us any problems.' 'Brilliant Orange' by David Winner 2008 ed.

In compliance with a Zairian government decree banning non-African first names, Zaireans dropped European given names in 1972. This left them with two Congolese names, neither of which the world press was familiar with, and since the players were cited in reverse order (i.e., surname first), their first (actually middle) name was mistaken for their surname and vice-versa.
