  • Location and Dates: Mexico, 31st May to 21st June 1970: Guadalajara (Estadio Jalisco 67,498), León (Estadio Guanajuato 32,000), Mexico City (Estadio Aztéca, 108,192), Puebla (Estadio Cuauhtemoc), Toluca (Estadio Luis Gutiérrez Dosal 'La Bombonera' 31,689).
  • Decided at FIFA Congress in Tokyo, 8th October 1964. Mexico won the vote beating the other candidate Argentina 56 -32.
  • Entries deadline 15th December 1967. 75 teams entered (8 for the first time), 68 teams actually played. Albania, Cuba, Guinea and Zaire's entries not accepted. North Korea disqualified for refusing to play Israel.
  • Qualifications drawn 31st January 1968 in Casablanca.
  • Finals drawn 10th January 1970, at the Maria Isabel Sheriton Hotel in Mexico City.
  • Participating teams: Belgium, Brazil, Bulgaria, Czechoslovakia, El Salvador, England, Israel, Italy, Mexico, Morocco, Peru, Romania, Sweden, Uruguay, USSR, West Germany. Same format as the 1962 & 1966 WC's.
  • No official seeds for this WC. The Organising committee decided on geographical sections to ensure a European / Latin American final.
  • "Fair Play" award made for first time in World Cup. Substitutes for the first; time two to be used from five nominated.
  • Jules Rimet Trophy retained by Brazil after their third World Cup victory.
